Julia Wandt is a communications expert specializing in university and science communications and institutional strategy development for academic institutions. Drawing on over twenty years of professional experience at universities and consultancy within the German research ecosystem, she partners with academic and scientific institutions to develop and implement their communication strategies and overall strategic concepts. Since 2005, she has guided universities through the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments and its successor program, the Excellence Strategy. This work complements her expertise in crisis communication.
Before founding jwd, Julia was responsible for science communication and strategy for the University of Freiburg’s Rectorate as part of the university management team from February 2021 to October 2024.
She was Director of Communications and Marketing and Media Spokesperson at the University of Konstanz from February 2010 to January 2021. Prior to that, from May 2002 to January 2010, she was the Communications and Marketing Officer of the Faculty of Business and Economics at Georg-August University of Göttingen, where she completed her studies in media and communication studies, business administration (with a focus on marketing), political science and civil law.
Julia was Chair of the German national association of communications professionals in higher education in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, from September 2014 to September 2023.
She also regularly offers her expertise as an assessor, technical expert and consultant for various committees, project groups and hearings on the status quo and future of academic communication and strategy development in the field of science and research, such as the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German Council of Science and Humanities, the science academies, the Science Media Center, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Bundestag.
In the fall of 2021, Julia and her colleagues from the German national association of communications professionals in higher education collaborated with Science in Dialogue initiative to set in motion the creation of the Scicomm-Support, the contact point for assistance in case of attacks and unobjective conflicts in science communication. Following its implementation in July 2023, Julia has continuously volunteered her time as one of three coordinators for the helpdesk.
